"If your child is unfortunately diagnosed with leukemia, what should you do?" For ordinary families, the first reaction is usually pain, unimaginable, and overcome with grief. A 6-year-old boy, Xiaojie (pseudonym), was unfortunately diagnosed with leukemia. His father, Lao Zheng (pseudonym), is a migrant worker on a construction site who earns only a few thousand yuan per month and has to support three children and take care of his elderly mother and disabled sister at home. The family is facing great difficulties. After his son's illness was diagnosed, Lao Zheng estimated that the treatment would cost around 50 million yuan, a huge amount of pressure that left him breathless. With no other options, he turned to social media and asked for help from good people in the community through the crowdfunding platform called Qingchongshou.
Lao Zheng's family lives in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, China, and mainly depends on him for their livelihood by working on construction site surveying. Lao Zheng and his wife have three children. Their youngest child is two years old, and their eldest child is Xiaojie who is also six years old. In addition to his children, Lao Zheng also needs to take care of his 70-year-old mother and 40-year-old sister who has cerebral palsy. The heavy burden of life has forced Lao Zheng to work hard. During the Spring Festival in 2023, Lao Zheng noticed that there was something wrong with his son Xiaojie's walking. He thought it was just an external injury from falling down, but it was discovered by a local orthopedic hospital that there was an abnormality in his blood. The local hospital recommended that Lao Zheng bring his child to a higher-level hospital for a second opinion. On August 18th, Xiaojie was taken to the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College for treatment.
After a comprehensive physical examination, Xiaojie's sample was sent to Guangzhou on August 21st for testing, and the diagnosis was made on August 24th. It was confirmed that Xiaojie had acute lymphocytic leukemia. The doctor immediately recommended that Xiaojie's parents admit him to the hospital for treatment and that he will undergo a long cycle of chemotherapy. The doctor told Lao Zheng and his wife that leukemia treatment requires at least three years of treatment, including chemotherapy, transplantation, anti-rejection, etc., and the initial treatment alone will cost at least 5 million yuan. Lao Zheng said: "My child's life has just begun. I cannot give up easily. I hope the doctor can do everything possible to save my son's life." During the treatment period, the family used up all their savings and also incurred a lot of debts. The treatment cannot be stopped, and the funds are a matter of urgency for them.
In order to save their son's life, the couple has already given everything they have. As a last resort, Lao Zheng launched a fundraising campaign through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation platform to seek help from caring individuals and raise funds for Xiaojie's treatment. Through the generous contributions of many people on the foundation's platform, 171728 yuan was quickly raised for Xiaojie's treatment. The fundraising is still ongoing at this time... ...
